The Virgin Dolls spammed us on Myspace and I spammed them back with another of my annoying questionnaires. There tunes are great and we hope to get them here in Antwerp soon, you can check out there latest release FIRE on iTunes, beatport etc etc etc.

The Virgin Dolls (http://www. myspace. com/thevirgindolls) is the electro project of Phoenix Rev. A few years ago, he created his own underground universe, based on comics, where he organized many events, featuring a unique blend of exhibitions, screenings and music. Composer, dj, and script-writer, he works now in several projects through the Rainbow Mode's production structure and e-label.

How did it all start?

With the release of the debut album "Blow your Mind" and the "No Love" remixes, with the goal to intermix several influences and explore with energy the electro, breakbeat and industrial soundscapes…

How do you define the music you play?

Furious rhythms balanced by melodious parts for a quite original and powerful result !

How hard was it too find a label here in Belgium??

Rainbow Mode (http://www. rainbowmode. com) was developed by Phoenix Rev to avoid this kind of situation. It’s an independent e-label specifically created for emerging talents, and a music production team specialized in electronic music.

Another week has passed and once again I found more willing victims to wear my hat. I think that next week I'll go with unwilling victims, that sounds like much more fun, but not having found any this week I'll stick to people who actually like being harassed by me.
It's cool how many interesting and beautiful people there are, sometimes I forget. I used to love walking into town on a saterday afternoon and just watch the herds go by. There are always cool people who stick out in one way or another. Usually because of the way they dress or the loud stuff they do. I absolutely love that! Now my friend Jort says (yeah, the guy in the picture) that people who try to be different, just do it for the sake of being different, not because they are. Something to do with self esteem and needing lots of attention. Well, I don't care about the why of it. I just love the fact that people do crazy things and wear insane clothes. Because otherwise it would be a pretty boring place out there.
So I have great plans for this hat, world domination being the least one of those, and I'm starting with all the oddball people I can find.

Its bitterly cold, Im spaced out cos Ive been spending too much time in bed and my eyes are still bleeding from a seven hour meal!! I dont mind the walk but it be nice to know where Im going, Im a long way from home again but Antwerp pops up all around. The art meuseum makes me feel like Im in a Jaques Tati movie Marga Weimens, The first dutch person to graduate from Antwerp Fashion school, has an amazing DEBUT collection, and like many dutch things it seems very sexually stimulative. Spider like black dresses, WOW the room creating the image of a distant future where high society belles still have debut ball's in the , all we needed were the galantly dressed boys in skin tight white suits sipping foam dripping cocktails.

Gronigen is making me itch, DJ Irie too, soo much in fact that he has just to won the DMC Benelux title and is ranked number three in the world!! Wonder how he was inspired by the trees and the cows!

Funny how much stuff we found, Drum and Bass heads the world over have heard of NOSIA. They are inspired by lots of cows too!!

A while back i remembered I still had some cool things stored away, so I went rummaging through the junk in my basement. I found lots of clothes dating from the nineties that should not have been worn by anybody..... ever, a towering heap of moldy Christmas decorations (could actually come in handy quite soon) and my grandfathers gardening hat. He used to wear it while doing all things gardeny, hence the aptly chosen name gardening hat. I had all but forgotten about the thing, but it is genuinely the coolest hat in the world, no, i dare say universe. It looks absolutely fabulous on anyone. Wear this hat and you obtain instant coolness. It works like a total babe magnet, sad to say, even on me. I have never had so much female attention. And people who've borrowed it have had the same pleasant experience. So I thought to my self: Why deprive the world of this wonderful item. It should be shared. I decided to make everybody I meet wear it, and then take pictures for posterity. Here's a sample of my little project. More to come...

Kostas Maskalides Interview

Greek DJ Kostas Maskalides, has been Dj'ing since 1997 and has recently moved to Belgium. We caught up with him via his Myspace to ask a few questions, and we are looking forward to seeing him and you this Saturday at the NOXX (his third mixtape (Athens to Antwerp) is available for download here to get you all in the mood for saterday)

I noticed you recently moved to Antwerp, Why? and what are your first impressions of Belgium?

Well the main reason was that I needed to relocate away from the city's lifestyle mainly to focus on my productions which are scheduled to be released in 2009. I believe I did reach my "climax" in Athens in terms of DJing and it was about time to move and expand my career to a little more international level. It came handy as my girlfriend is flemish, so we moved from Athens to a beautiful isolated suberban house in the city of beveren. Here I can work in my studio 24/7 without anoying anyone.
Belgium is totally inspiring for me. People seem to be distant at first but when they get to know you, they reveal a personality full of kindness. There's also big potencial here regarding the club scene, and people really feel the energy and react to it!

How do you describe your style and who are your biggest influences?

My style is mainly progressive house and tech-house but I also incorporate ellements of minimal techno in my sets. Originally I started as a tribal house DJ but I had to evolve as the music genre itself.
I have a lot of respect for spanish and portuguese DJ/producers and my main influence since the begining of my career has been D-Formation mostly for his incredibly executed pattern construction through-out his productions.

You have been playing for a long time, what is the record that has been in your box the longest??

I wouldn't know... too many boxes and cases but one track I played over and over is definitely, Coca & villa's "La Noche"! Trully the ultimate atmospheric journey. No matter the audience or the venue, this classic prog-melodic fiesta always works the dancefloor!

What is your favorite tune of 2008?

"Shameless" by D-Formation..... by far the best for '08.

What would you like MORE of?

More people getting evolved in our music industry. More people going out just to have a good time and experience music as a form of artistic expression.

What would you like LESS of?

LESS taxes in Belgium. It is ridiculous.

If you could change anything the world, what would be the first thing you would do?

The only thing I can do as everybody else! Influence others!
And that's really the only thing we CAN do.
That's all I'm after... in the name of humanity.

Kaizers Orchestra and Mintzkov

Yesterday I went to see Kaizers Orchestra. But before they started playing I was pleasantly surprised by your very own Mintzkov! On stage their sound reminded me a little of placebo, but when I listened to the CD it didn't anymore.... strange.... Anyway, I really enjoyed seeing them on stage. It was a very solid performance and although they were an opening act, people really seemed to be warming up to them.

The first time I saw Kaizers was during "de nachten" festival in 2004 and I immediately fell in love with them. They play a kind of very jumpable gypsy, polka rock and their performances are always completely over the top. They're from Norway and all their lyrics are in Norwegian. So I was very surprised to find that all the people around me were singing along with a vengeance. Did they actually know what they were singing? Apparently Kaizers Orchestra has a very solid fan base. Sadly enough, apart from those regulars, there weren't that many people that had come to watch the show. I was happy to see that it didn't diminish the enthusiasm of band or crowd and after about five songs the lead singer suggested that the two should change places. So the whole crowd mounted the stage and the band started playing in the pit. I was sure we'd all fall through the stage! The weight of all the jumping people made the whole stage wobbly, it was so cool! Again, I had such a good time...

Today I crawled out of bed for some social, political and environmental awareness. And boy, did I get some! I am now so aware you could almost say I've got heightened senses. World Press Photo is an annual contest for professional press photography. The photographs in the exhibition depict the most heinous of human circumstances in a chillingly beautiful way. It made me stop in horror and awe at the same time. The contradiction: beauty of composition and lighting versus dismembered bodies and families in utter despair. After taking it all in, it left me with an uncomfortable feeling of doom and gloom. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely worth it. But don't bring small children or women suffering from PMS.

I never quite understood those lyrics, but when I went to see the Black Kids on Wednesday, everything became clear. Just to get a good look at them I had to elbow my way through herds of 16 year old girls and boys of questionable sexual persuasion. The band consisted of a drummer, a modest looking bass player, a lead singer with outrageous hair and two wonderfully voluptuous female vocals who both played some kind of keyboard. I really liked the lead singers voice, it had a very Robert Smithian quality. The songs were catchy and the performance was full of bubbly energy but the dutch crowd couldn't be budged. Only when they played their last song, people started moving and enjoying themselves. Maybe everybody was trying to be the coolest kid in class and was afraid to dance. Maybe it was just dutch stiffness. I don't know. I just think it's a horrible waste of perfectly fine concert.

When I was in Amsterdam the other day, I kept reading these articles about the fall of the British music scene, I think its only because dutch promoters are trying to book indie bands. Across the pond it seems that droning brit guitar music is out and grime rules. This is not new acts like; Dizzy Rascal and Roots Manuva pave the way for acts like croyden rapper/producer Goldielocks (Even my mum has dolla dolla on her phone!!) She's took part of the Red bull Music Academy a few weeks ago and is now starting to push the promo as she releases her EP before Christmas.

The last ten days I have been to more museums than in the last year, I am not one to go out of my way to see art if the opportunity rises to visit some of the greatest museums, I bite my lip and prepare to be battered and bruised by too much art in one place. Antwerp reveals its important artistic culture in its magnificent museums, works from its old master Rubens are all over the town but the panels in the cathedral is a DON'T miss (unless you drank too much beer) tourist spot. With so many to choose from my favorite have to be the MOMU and the MuHKA. The 20 years of MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA exhibit at the MOMU sparked off my interest in this Antwerp designer who has yet to show his true identity to the public, and the exhibition has some great artisan pieces. While in the MuHKA 26 artist try to organize the world in an exhibit called "The Order Of Things" amongst the complete dictionary and an artists entire collection of black and white photos since 1983. Amid this jumble, Dutch photographer Hans Eijkelboom seems to make the best order with his long time project "photo notes" he brings order to his huge photo collection by grouping photos of people wearing the same clothes, more anthropologist than artist.
Art-world rock star Damien Hirst's crystal skull in the Rijksmeuseum, has sparked off the most discussion in the household. The queues at the Rijksmuseum was long (to avoid it buy an e-ticket!!) and having toured the great works from Rembrandt and his contemporary's, you have to queues again to see "For the love of god" and through a dark maze, in a pitch black room the crystal skull sits like an ancient relic or religious icon for the world to gaze at. Hirst seems to be the best at creating worldwide reactions to his works and this time he succeeds by making you ask yourself; Is this 50 million euro lump of bone and stone Art? Maybe he feels the same as me, there is no such thing as Art only life, and he uses the main elements of life "Death and Money" too illustrate his point!! Well I do know that he is not the first man too make a crystal skull checkout this great collection!!

No sunday coach session this week (again), instead I was up early Sunday morning at a book festival with New Rising Sun. Well I'm not sure that book people are my friends... I think that the idea of queuing for anybody's autograph a bit of a joke and especially at a book festival with over 160 000 visitors. But in a calm little conference room, away from the crowds were several small conference rooms where in the dim light poets read in dutch. Well not much use to me, I couldn't understand, so i let the words roll over me, then I understood one poem about tomato's, but on closer inspection it was rubbish!! Oh well I recon the gig at Kavka will be much better!!

I hate winter! I can't stand the cold, wet, grayness. Walking home in the rain after another grueling night of drinking, I passed an agreeable looking lad sheltering from the drizzle. I gave him a friendly smile which apparently encouraged him to ask: "Are you interested in sex tonight? I'm offering". I was walking at a brisk pace, he had a slight stutter and I was in an advanced state of inebriation so it took me a while to figure out what he had said. But when it finally got through to me I could only wonder about his sunny optimism. How did he picture this happening? Did he really think that a freezing, wet, popsicle of a girl would be interested in casual sex with a complete stranger? Looking around me, I could only see people hurrying and scurrying home with hunched backs and pulled down hoods. Yet here was this boy still looking at the bright side of things, good for him! I proceeded home with the warm and fuzzy feeling that there was still a bit summer left in this rain drenched world.

But anyway, I'm still making plans to migrate to somewhere where more boys are called Giorgio... :D

On my Saturday afternoon meander around the center of Antwerp I found something rather surprising in the Stadsvestale: Flair sponsored, Models Office 09 competition semi-finals were being held. Of course I have photos for you, in fact I have them faster than the website, so I guess the judges are still deciding on the finalists, I dont think any of them are Top Model so dont know why there taking so long!!

It was definitely more interesting to watch the Antwerp Fashonata look on.. in delighted disgust!

Last nights party at petrol was something of a pleasent supprise, DJ Yll! fans and flashy kids flocked from far and wide to"You are under our controll" with Anoraak and Arbotique. It was and evening of pretty boys and hipsters, all jumping along to the great live electro sounds of Anoraak. I ve been doing a bit of research this morning and this Nice born and Paris based electro artist has been working his way through europe the last few months, he has played alongside moby and has a residency at Social Club in Paris. His unique blend of electronica makes him stand out, his presence on stage as a one man keyboard band is great, if he was only able to leave the machines alone for a while he might really take over the audience. Deffinately one to look out for in 2009.

Well happy Halloween!!!

Finally and excuse for me to ware makeup and get dressed up!! It seems as though the citizens of Antwerp don't celebrate Halloween, when we mentioned it to our friends in Mama Matrea they thought it was tomorrow, even the little emo's at the Vampire Party thought we were bonkers!!

Vampire Partys are fun, full of people who obviously hadn't gone there to celebrate the occult just for one evening, real goths who's devotion to their image leads them to get jeered at when out in the city!! Finally all together on one dance-floor and they jeer back at us, goths, cyber goths, emo girls and rocker boys, an explosive cocktail of ugly kids driven by pounding industria/breakcore/jumpstyle electro crossovers. Like the evil vampires we stood and pointed,
"look at that one her hair is great"
"what about the boy in the dress??"
"Or the old woman with silver spiderwebs on her top hat?"
The truth about vampires is that they are not such pretty people, the more makeup and ridiculous clothing they were, they uglier and shyer they are. Not to say the geeky resident DJ's didn't make us laugh in their all in one PVC outfits. Oh well little children, don't get all emo, we came and took fresh blood from you!!

New Rising Sun @ TRIX 30/10/2008 - Gig Review!!

Well Its not often that I go somewhere new, but yesterday I discovered a new part of Antwerp, TRIX. after taking an old tram and a short walk in to the biting cold concrete jungle suburbia, we arrived at Trix. Only to be told that the gig was full and the party was closed. LOL!! the look on Romulus's face, I just walked in and then was pleasantly surprised to see N.R.S plus their whole extended family's watching Mighty Joe Moon. I was Mightily unimpressed by Joe Moon, seems that they walked out of the nineties and had missed the last 8 years. Oh well inject some attitude guys, and some good looks and relax and start to enjoy yourselves!!

N.R.S had a great gig, they're my mates so I cant really say anything nasty about them, but I enjoyed there gig, a few bum notes here and there, and they finally relaxed on stage and enjoyed themselves, and so did I. Proud mums and dads beamed on as the applause got louder and louder, seems that a bit of folk rock cheered up the crowd after the dismal trip-rock of Mighty Joe Moon.

The third band to play was well known artists Koala though it has to be said that they can only be well known for there great guitarist Carlos Dyckmans, I would have much preferred to see him play with his side project band bastard nation instead of this idiot Belgan rapper IslaSoul. The band felt a bit build with a misplacing of musicians, mad props to the bassist for some nice slaps, but do you really need an imac and a keyboards and a drummer?? The pretty little front girl Sarah, sang beautifully but her lack of energy made me feel as though they should charge her up on Haribo and red bull before the gig, Like David and his thirteen beers!

Of course like all good blogger's I Stood in the crowd stoned and arrogant, someone should slap that rapper I cried!!! as he glared at me across the room. Maybe I will remix one of there tracks, watch out for the "slap the rapper-Koala" remix coming soon!! It is only anther tiny snapshot of the booming music scene here, and it was good to see some local artists in the crowd, supporting there local scene, and Local radio DJ's from Radio Centraal (106.7 FM stereo or streaming here) who we were finally able to give them a demo, and promised to play a track this coming thursday at midnight, LOL Drise is supprised to hear what he will choose!!

Looks Like Sieta has been spending too much time with pretty boys, she had lots of fun with Giorgio!! Maybe we will see him on a billboard soon!!

Its actually been quite a while since I sat down and wrote for this blog, seems that soo much stuff has happened in a small week. I was pretty busy getting wasted with drise and working in the resto, Mels left on Wednesday and he seemed to have a good trip although random texts about Singapore and fun messages are the only trail he has left behind. Of course the sun and the beach in sydney are awesome how do you think that makes me feel fu**er. Send some photos we are all and want to see the sun even if its only on my screen!!!

Blast Your Ghetto was great, I was soo mashed and everyone was Tripping in my nice fluo hoodie (check here for the flash). Nice to see the return after three months of Fanklub, they have there finger on the pulse and Rocked the room early into the morning. Playing alongside was Rex the Dog who has some fabulous remixes around at the moment, and has just realesed his EP.

I will be missing our fantastic pad alot on my holiday, if I have time that is. I am leaving tomorrow to stay with Tris's bro in london for one evening and by friday I will be in Sydney, on the following Thursday 23/10 I land in Auckland. In the between time Ill be making my way from the north to the south island. My return flight lands on the 18th of November. Woo Hoo!!!

What a suprise to show up to the new Soir Jeudi, and find that cafe capital had been taken over by the Forum snowboard team and lots of skater kids messing in there new era caps and sweet threads. What fun we had this weekend, +more than I even expected. It started when they tried to climb in the boot of a taxi, "7 wont fit" he said then started the engine, the screaming and banging made him jump out to open the boot... should have yelled for them to shut up. Look the forest is advancing, it seems to be taking over our house. Fluokids are starting there own label finally after three years of hardcore blogging and posting over 2000 tunes they are now ready to make a profit from music. While us smaller less successfull blogs and artists have to deal with rediculous fines from the sabam for posting mixtapes and promoting the music that we love. If only they spent a little more time trying to find a way to make money from the consumers of music and not from its creators, who often cant put bread on the table for themselves let alone for fat cats behind some buro.

Finally a new vision has popped into our head; what started out as some annoying cardboard in the hall way has turned into a crazy new video project. The team buckled down to work this afternoon finally posting the new front page to moreantwerp.com as we sat messing with photoshop, drinking coffee and tasting some green the ideas became clearer and the mind more foggy. We sat and wrote the first draft of the screen play, idillicly the budget would be huge showing off our prowess as directors, instead we'll glue the set from cardboard get our friends to shoot it and beg borrow and steal anything that is needed. Luckely New Rising Sun are playing at TRIX on the 30th of october which will make a great finally to this magical journey. Maybe I should get hold of Directing Movies for Dummys or something.

Its all ready friday morning and Im trying to remember specificly what happend since I last wrote, but as usuall its a blur of bong hits, tequila, tents and too much attention from too many people. Saterday night New Rising Sun went to play round the campfire at Vinger pop, apperently they had a great time with a bunch smelly hippies, but give four boys with guitars free booze all night and they will have fun standing naked in the artic circle.... Mels and I prefered to jump around like crazy electrick eels at the mirror tent. Stealthbombers hosted a wicked party looking forward to go to anather one sadly I cant read the website (its the in flemish).

Oh I remeber that I have to wear my yellow jeans tomorrow! Can't decide what with though; maybe I will just wear them around my shoulders or something , like a scarf, or a turban???

Hey everybody

Just a quick note to say we are having some computer problems so Im not going to post the stuff from Laundry day untill next week. I had a sweet time... Thanks to everybody for looking after me especially to Smos and Baby B for the great backstage experiance, and DJ Prinz for a wicked after party, by 7 I was still standing but well MASHED!!

Im off to Gronyngan (not sure how to spell it) on friday to work in the wagamama there so I wont be in antwerp to party, I will be back on wednesday.

Yo Yo everybody!!

Good news! I will be going down under for some +MORE journalism checking out cultural and artistic hotspots like Syney, Auckland, Wellington, Christchuch and Dunedin.

Leaving Belgium on the 15th of October and returning on the 17th of November. I will be Uniting with all my old friends in Sydney for one week of mischief and mayhem crossing over To NZ starting in Auckland and working my way down to Dunedin.

Groningen is a bit of a treck from here in antwerp, not exactly the type of place you would go out to on a saterday night to make a change from the routine, nor would I go there for a romantic weekend. Yet anywhere I go Im still managing to have the best time of my life. I steped off the train into this little haven of beautifull dutch girls on millions of bycicles. Having avoided getting run over, I made it to the Wagamama, it is smaller and quieter than the one in antwerp, I think that I should collect them, maybe try and work in them all, at least mels is probably beating me he said he had worked in 17 now. BLURGH!
The dutch maybe dont know how to dress and look at me like Im an alien in my flashy T's, they do know how to party and I had a wicked saterday night. Ronold (the head chef) tried to get me pretty wasted, not so difficult and after lots of beers in the restaurant we hit the party next door. which to my suprise was full of hot chicks a wicked light show. Well known Djs Kraak and Smaak spun some tunes. Ha ha there up for MTV europe best band and they are getting supported by perez hilton on his blog. They rocked the party so heres there tune "squeeze me"

Then after getting bored of the dutch boys and girls trying soo hard to be cool and fashonable I made my way to the Pand48 where they had a wicked little electro party and we bounced the night away to a great set.

Also found some cool stuff you should visit and do if you ever end up there.
Saterday afternoon is the time to make your way to the main shopping street, just take a moment to stop and have a coffee and watch as the people pass dressed in there finery, then make your way to Puur for a sandwich, visit the purchaze store for your sneaker fix and supprisingly they have GOI GOI in the LEADS jean store, wicked. When you are awoken by the bells at 11 in the morning then you should make your way to the little cafe under the Martini tower and eat pofferchus in the sun (small pankcakes drowned in butter and icing suger).

Yo +MORE posse we got over a thousand friends on myspace yesterday at around four a clock in the afternoon. Remember to check out our blogger site and comment. Tell your friends about the cool site you found, beats talking about the weather!!

Of course weve been busy little boys this week. We did get a chance to chill out and listen to some super groovy reagge on wednesday (shanti was playing - Izzy maze), hangin out like the don and then rocking out to the lilly allen remix. Tottaly cool!! He promised to write a guest blog for us to be posted on the 25th with some reggae tunes from his huge collection!

The month prooved fruitfull and we got a cool new toy to take video and photos. Watch out +MORE posse is about!!

DJ Prinz was at bar jeudi and when we asked if he was exicited about laundry day his comment was "NO! Im excited about my after-party!!" Me too looks like Im in for an action packed taste of antwerp tomorrow. I guess Im going to stay in and do laundry in preperation tonight.

Sorry no music got sent a lot of stuff but not much so far that i like. Please keep your stuff coming in and any ideas for projects too!!

Everybody is talking about this video on the blogosphere today, Im not sure what to think, its great, its by The Streets. . But I was way more of a fan when he was talking about being blinded by the lights and fit girls who just know it all. I guess the UK is really suffering as finally the politicians are admiting to the recession, the credit crunch is really biting into the lives of the public. Life still goes on and Im still able to put food in my mouth and download free MP3s then life is cool.

LITTLE BOOTS. I really like this little spacekid who came to my attention when I was reading the lipster. today, maybe im a little behind but she just posted the sickest mixtape as well as being hot totty and crazy good at playing the tenori-on

Bar jeudi, the music sucked but the chicks liked it, then DJ Prinz playd but the dance floor was full of sweaty asses, eeeewwww I hate that smell. Funny how sometimes the gay crowd just invade. Yeah of course we had a great time, I usually avoid going out with 6 other boys but from time to time a band of brothers is just what you need. Met crazy little 15 yo's and got pushed off the dance floor by a crazy chick with a yellow neckerchief. Girls this is not fashon, it just makes you look like an easter egg, dont wear it!

Zepha finally send some pics that we took when mels had his exhibition, thanx babes see you soon.

Some people are asking were going to be this weekend, well no decision yet, maybe I will post some flyers later.

The boys from next door, new rising sun booked a gig last night at Trix, antwerp. Im still waiting on the flyer and stuff for more information but they did give me permisson to post not one but two of there demo tracks. Even if the sun is not shining our friend Shanti (Zion Lions - Antwerp reggae massive) makes a great juice in the center of antwerp everyday. When the shops are open and he can be botherd to get out of bed.

Checked out the new graffity at Kavka. It was done this weekend when international street artists and also b-boys DJs and MC's joined in for CAN IT. Guess that there is more to antwerp than electro and pretty girls. Cool art check the pics.
